Elections: taking part in the European Parliament elections
If you are a national of a Member State of the European Union residing in Italy and wish to vote in the election of members of the European Parliament from Italy, you must submit a specific application to the mayor of the Italian municipality in which you are living at least 90 days before the date set for the election.
Right of EU citizens resident in Italy to vote and to stand as a candidate in elections for members of the European Parliament for Italy
The application must expressly state:
- that you wish to exercise your right to vote only in Italy;
- your citizenship;
- your address in your municipality of residence and your country of origin;
- that you are entitled to vote in your country of origin;
- that no penal or civil court order has been issued against you depriving you of your right to vote in your country of origin.

If you do not wish to use the application form, you may still send an application containing the above information to the municipality in which you are living.
If you are a citizen of an EU Member State, eligible to vote in Italy, you may also appear on a list of candidates for members of the European Parliament for Italy. To this end, you must submit to the registry of the competent court of appeal, at the time of filing of the list of candidates, in addition to the documents requested from national candidates, a declaration stating:
- your citizenship, date and place of birth, last address in the Member State of origin and current address in Italy;
- the municipality or local authority in the country of origin on whose electoral rolls you are included, if any;
- that you are not a candidate and will not stand as a candidate for the same European Parliament election in any other Member State;
- that you have not been deprived of the right to stand as a candidate in the Member State of origin owing to a judicial or administrative decision.

Voting in the European elections
If you are an Italian citizen, resident in another EU Member State, for European Parliament elections you may choose to vote for representatives of the EU country where you are resident, according to the specific provisions of the legislation of that country, or:
- you may vote for a candidate standing for Italy, at the polling station set up for that purpose by the Italian consular and diplomatic representations in your country of residence;
- you may notify the mayor of the municipality on whose electoral roll you are included that you wish to return home to vote in that municipality.
