Certificates and extracts from the birth

They are issued by the municipality in which the act was registered or transcribed. The birth certificate, containing personal details, is a document required for identifying the newborn: from the moment it is registered in the civil status registers, it will be entered in the registry office of the municipality of residence and trigger the process for allocating a ‘codicefiscale’ (tax code) and health card, which will register the infant with the National Health Service and allow him or her to use the health services.

The birth certificate can be requested by the parents of the newborn or by any interested party who knows the child’s personal details.

The birth extract

The birth extract contains more details than the birth certificate: in addition to name, surname, date and place of birth, it also gives the time of birth, the parent's names and other civil status-related information such as marriage, divorce, etc.

Unlike the certificate, the birth extract can only be requested by the parents or, in the case of an adult, by the person concerned. It can only be requested at the civil status office where the birth declaration was submitted.

Some municipalities allow a birth certificate to be requested online by completing a special form on the municipality’s website.
